Boy, was it an exciting day at the BOP and Tiger Beat offices!
Once a year, BOP and Tiger Beat offices hosts a career day, in which a group of middle school students from The Archer School for Girls visit our headquarters and learn all about what it’s like to work for the mags! This year, six 8th grade girls got to explore the ins and outs of working in the entertainment industry. They got to help make quizzes, create posts on Twitter AND they even got to interview two very special guests!
Dancing duo Mollee Gray and Kent Boyd from Teen Beach Movie popped in for a quick visit and were so excited to answer any questions the girls had! They had such a blast chatting with the girls and taking pics around the office! Oh, and take a look at the props they found… SO funny!
Also, check out some of the awesome interview the Archer Girls did with Mollee and Kent!
Archer Girls: Who did you become the closest with filming Teen Beach Movie?
Mollee: Maia Mitchell and I became really close! We did a pilot together before the movie, but we both had very similar personalities, and didn’t click instantly. But then while we were filming together constantly, we became inseparable! We would have sleepovers and hang out all the time, even though our hotel rooms were right next to each other, LOL! It’s been that way since she moved from Australia. She even lived with me in Los Angeles, California for about a year!
Kent: I started out with the choreographer, and I was listening to TBM soundtrack, helping make up dances. There were a lot of people, like Chrissie Fit, who’s a little spitball fire of energy and she was really overwhelmed one day with the dances. I was like, “Hey it’s going to be OK. I can help you with dances.” From then on, she improved so much and now she can go to dance classes and keep up with everyone. So we became really close from that and we would even choreograph dances for her, Garrett Clayton and Grace Phipps to perform! It was so much fun!
Archer Girls: What’s your most embarrassing moment while filming Teen Beach Movie?
Mollee: The cast and I were traveling from the resort to the film site, and I always had the most energy after filming. My favorite song during filming was “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen. I forgot my headphones in the van that day so I was jamming to the song with my speaker. I was dancing so hard that I threw my head forward and hit it on the hard panel in front of me. Grace Phipps was secretly filming me the entire time, and after she showed me the recording, I could not stop laughing! I have never laughed so hard in my life. You could literally see the stars around my head!
Kent: On the very first day of shooting Teen Beach Movie, I had to chew gum in one scene and Chrissie Fit had to pop my bubble gum with the heel of her shoe. We had to time it perfectly and I just couldn’t do it! The director kept saying, “Kent, pop that bubble!” and I was almost in tears because it took so many takes and it ended up not even being put in the movie because I couldn’t do it! LOL!
Archer Girls: Do you get noticed more from being on So You Think You Can Dance or Teen Beach Movie?
Mollee: When I did SYTYCD, social media wasn’t popular at all, and I was on Season 6 and now they’re on Season 11, so I don’t know if I was really known because I didn’t have the followers. But after TBM, I feel like I’m the most noticed in airports and stuff. I will get kids asking me, “Are you Giggles? Do your Giggles voice!” But then you get the older dancers that know you from the show.
Kent: SYTYCD was the first thing for both of us and sometimes I’ll go to dance conventions and get the older people that say, “Oh, I know you from SYTYCD!” And then I get younger kids that say, “Rascal! Rascal! Do your Rascal voice!” And I don’t know what they mean because this is my Rascal voice!
Archer Girls: If you could give your younger self advice, what would you say?
Mollee: It’s not as big of a deal as you think it is, Mollee! I always think the smallest things are so big. And you wake up years later and look back and laugh. I tend to over analyze everything, like getting good feedback on auditions, but no callback. But at the end of the day, it’s no big deal. Just live life because you’re so young!
Kent: So much of our lives we want to be older, we want to be this, we want to be that and I always used to tend to compare my success to others. Now I am thinking, “Kent, you’re going to go on your own path!” There’s so much of my life where I wanted to be older, but those younger years were so amazing and I’ll never get back, so just live in the moment!
Archer Girls: Is there going to be a Teen Beach Movie 2?
Mollee: We have no idea! It would be silly if they didn’t make one, but there hasn’t been confirmation yet!
Kent: It was so well-received movie and now there’s so much you could do with it now and the possibilities are endless. They have such goofy and fun characters that you could take anywhere, so fingers crossed that it’ll come out and the music and dancing will be just as fun and even better!
Thanks for hanging with us, Mollee and Kent! We had so much fun!
