On tonight’s new episode of Jessie, Matt Shively guest stars as a laid-back manny for Zuri’s friend (and crush!) Stuart. Matt also stars in How to Build a Better Boy coming out later this summer! Here at BOP and Tiger Beat, we were lucky enough to get a chance to talk to Matt about his experiences with both. Check out our exclusive Q&A with him below!
BOP&TB: Tell us about your Jessie character. How are you like him and different than him in real life?
Matt: He’s basically a 10 year old trapped in a 22 year old’s body, but he is given the responsibility to take care of a child who is mentally and emotionally older than him. He wants to give Stuart the life he never had by allowing him to do whatever he wants. I’d say I’m like him in a lot of ways. I know what is right and what is wrong but I love to do things very spontaneously. Plans are overrated. I’m different from him because a lot of what I do in the episode I would NEVER allow a child to do.
BOP&TB: You play a manny on Jessie. What’s the most unusual job you’ve ever had in real life?
Matt: The most unusual job I have ever had was working at a machine shop. I used to have to sand blast tools that dentists used. I never really got the hang of it, so let it be known that there’s at least 100 dentist tools out there that may have been sand blasted incorrectly.
BOP&TB: You’re also starring in How to Build a Better Boy. Can you tell us about any fun memories from set?
Matt: It’s really hard to choose fun moments from filming because the entire experience was amazing and filled with things I never had the chance to do before. We went to Niagara Falls on our day off, and it was amazing to share such a beautiful experience with people I had just met. All of the places we visited made it so much harder to leave; at the end of the day, those trips made us this unbreakable family. The month after filming was so hard because I was so used to seeing these people every day. Some became my brothers, and others became my sisters. Splitting from a family that amazing was a fun memory in itself because I know I won’t ever find a bond that strong again.
