As close as 5 Seconds of Summer and One Direction are now, it’s hard to believe that either group was ever nervous to hang out with the other. The guys are practically band BFFs, but the boys of 5SOS recently dished that they were scared to tour with 1D when they were first invited on the Take Me Home Tour.
“It was all very scary for us because we were a young rock band type of thing,” drummer Ashton Irwin confessed. “We were very confused by why we would go on tour with One Direction in the first place because it was so different.”
But the boys quickly opened up to the idea. “It seemed like a good idea to grow our music and our live performance [skills]. It would make such a dynamic tour and really explain the difference between the two bands,” Ashton added. “It’s cool that young kids get to go home with a bit of education on rock music.”
The boys also spilled some secrets about their band name. “People ask, ‘Why is it called 5 Seconds of Summer when there’s four of you?'” Ashton said. Guitarist Luke Hemmings responded, “I’d change [the name] to ‘4 Seconds of Summer’ just so people stop asking what it means.” And Ashton joked, “I’d want a name that is so self-explanatory that no one can ask us any questions about it – ‘Generic Band Number One.'”Â
Wow, with how far 5SOS has come (and how goofy the lads are), it’s so crazy to think that they’d be afraid of One Direction. But we totally understand how nerve-wracking it must have been to open for a hugely popular band. What do you think about 5SOS’ story? Aren’t you glad the boys have come to love 1D like brothers?
