Most of my life has been pretty great. There have been so many people who have helped and supported me, and I’m really thankful for that. One thing that was really tough for me though, that I think many kids can relate to, was when my parents got divorced.

Being a kid in a military family, I was used to my parents being in separate places for long periods of time because of overseas deployment. I just figured our family would always come back together. Then one time, it didn’t. I had started acting about the time my parents began going through their divorce, and I used my sadness and anger from it to bring out my emotions for some of the roles I had. When kids in my class would talk about their parents being together, it would hurt. Especially since, at the time, I was the only kid in my class whose parents weren’t together. But I also knew that there were some cool things too—like two Christmases! That sounded awesome, but still I knew I would miss waking up on Christmas morning and us not all being together.

The worst part about it was remembering how great it used to be and knowing we would never be that picture-perfect family again. That’s why I’d cry sometimes at school when my friends talked about their moms and dads. I just wanted my parents to stay together and didn’t understand why they couldn’t work things out. I started to go to the counselor at school, and that helped. Having my sister and brother to talk to about it was cool too. And having friends and things to do, like sports and video games, took my mind off it.

It was difficult then, and it’s still challenging sometimes now. I often leave things at one house and have to go back to get them. There’s always tension if my parents are in the same room together, and usually it’s only one of them there because of it. It’s tough coordinating schedules from one house to another. As time goes on, I get older and more independent and that makes it easier. Sure, it’s something I never wanted to go through, but I feel I am a stronger person because of it.
