Amandla Stenberg relates to her “The Hate U Give” character in more ways than one!
Based on the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller, the film – which hits theaters everywhere on October 19th – follows Starr Carter (played by Amandla) who lives two separate lives when it comes to home and school, but those lives intersect when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend at the hands of a police officer.
One major theme within the film is finding your voice and standing up for what you believe in, and that’s exactly what Amandla has done in her own life. In a recent interview, the 20-year-old actress opens up about the film revealing that her childhood was a lot like Starr’s in terms of living two separate lives. Check out what she had to say:
“People did not understand where I lived, never went to my side of town. They didn’t really understand what it feels like to be black or how beautiful our black communities are.”

Amandla is not the only one getting real about this film. Co-star, Sabrina Carpenter, recently revealed what she hopes fans take away from the movie!
