“Working on a movie like “Shazam”…I’ve always dreamed about it happening, but I didn’t think it was really going to happen.”
How would you describe “Shazam”’s Billy Batson?
Asher: Billy’s had a hard life. He’s been out there in the world alone, and he’s basically fearless. That’s what I have in common with Billy surprisingly. He’s not afraid of anything. He just wants to find someone that will love and accept him, a family.
In the movie, you and Zachary Levi play the same character. How did you prepare for that?
Asher: We really tried to connect with one another, and with the character to make sure it worked, but we only had one week to work together and make sure that our facial expressions and mannerisms were similar.
If you could have one superpower, what would it be?
Asher: Flight! It would be so cool just to fly around and explore the world and go to all these different places. Come on, who doesn’t want to fly?!
What do you hope fans take away from “Andi Mack”?
Asher: It’s important to use your voice. The show is about inclusiveness. I get DMs all the time about how Andi Mack changes people’s lives and their perspectives. With Jonah’s panic attacks, there are so many kids out there who can relate, who are dealing with anxiety hiding and don’t know how to express themselves.
How would you describe your musical sound?
Asher: I would say my sound is similar to Shawn Mendes’! And a little bit of Michael Jackson—I’ve heard that, too, from a couple of people. It’s amazing. What a compliment!
When can fans expect to hear the full album?
Asher: I just want to get music out there, and show what I’m about and who I am as an artist. I love it and I want to keep doing it. Hopefully we have an album coming very soon!
Do you feel like you get to share a different side of yourself with your music?
Asher: Of course! In the show, Jonah’s not really able to express how he’s feeling to Andy, so he writes a song, and that’s how he’s able to express himself, and that really helps. It’s the same with me. Why not write a song about it and write it down?
