TB Tribune: Teen Photographer Alexsey Reyes Talks the Importance of Building a Positive Online Community

As someone who doesn’t take no for an answer, I always try my best to achieve whatever it is I’ve set myself to do.

Growing up in a low-income family, resources for creating art were often limited, so I began to experiment and try new things. I found photography and fell in love with the craft. It was something I wasn’t familiar with, but I knew it was possible to learn, so I started practicing.

When starting out, there wasn’t anyone there to guide me through and teach me more about the art, so I turned to social media and that forever changed my life. I would stay up for hours and hours researching and watching videos and found friends on instagram who would give me advice and support my work — which really made a difference! A few years into sharing my work online, I started to grow an audience, which gave me motivation. The constant support really made an impact in my decision to keep creating. This is when I realized I wanted to show my support for others in any way I could.

Two years ago, I founded Teenscreate, an online community dedicated to sharing the stories of incredible teens in hopes of inspiring and sparking motivation in others who may need it. I found that surrounding myself with inspiring people and their positive energy really motivated me stay persistent in whatever it was I was passionate about even when things might seem too difficult to accomplish!

I try my best to work hard everyday and maintain this mindset to create a more positive community through my work and presence both on and offline. It’s the kind comments and messages I receive that create that drive within me to work hard and allow me to understand what I’m capable of achieving. And if I can do it, you can too!
