What was your inspiration behind the title track?
Jenna: For ‘Be Like You,’ it was written in a season in my life where I was trying to figure out who I am as an artist and a person and that just has a really bold title, ‘Be Like You,’ and the catch is would you wanna be like you? So throughout as I was writing all these songs, I was really just trying to find out more about myself through these lyrics, and so I thought ‘Be Like You’ was the perfect fit.
How have you grown and evolved as an artist for this EP compared to the past?
Jenna: I was a big part of both EPs, but specifically in this one a bunch of the songs I got to write parts, like a bunch of bridges on my own, some verses. And one of the songs I completely wrote by myself. I showed it to Jordan [the producer on the song] not thinking much of it, and he was like ‘I love it, we have to record it.’ Just getting to show that part of me and who I am as a songwriter and how much I’ve grown in my lyrics and my style of writing has definitely changed. And my style of music changes by the minute, so I’m just really excited for other people to compare what a year does to your style of music, because it’s definitely way different.
Can you tell us more about this song you wrote yourself?
Jenna: It’s very close to my heart, and it’s [about] kind of my first relationship…it was just very confusing and I think girls my age can relate to that…and the whole song is just the story of how the relationship went…Out of frustration and confusion and heartbreak is what I wrote that song to, and the lyrics just came out really, really easily. I wrote it in about an hour, so it’s just all very truthful to me and my heart.
What do you hope fans take away from your EP?
Jenna: I hope a bunch of people can connect to the lyrics…I just think all the songs bring it back to a teenager writing about normal teenage things that teenagers go through in their everyday life, and sometimes people feel like they’re alone in this world, and they’re just totally not. I want people to remember that they’re not alone in this world and that there’s other people just like them going through the same thing.
