From overcoming a pinched nerve in her elbow with no guarantee of recovery to putting in hours at a music industry admin job to get her foot in the creative door, it’s safe to say Megan Davies has fought hard to be where she is today.
Now she’s embarking on a tour with Boyce Avenue and celebrating the release of her new “Bad Poetry” EP, and there’s no sign of her slowing down.
We caught up with Megan to chat about her musical beginnings and exciting new ventures. Check it out!
TigerBeat: When did you first discover your passion for music?
Megan: When I was twelve! I found an old guitar in my grandparents’ basement and became obsessed with it. I used to spend all my time trying to figure out how to play my favorite songs.

TigerBeat: You have quite the story of how you made it to where you are now. How did you stay motivated while facing obstacles on the way to your dream?
Megan: I always try to stay focused on what I’m working on in that moment. Things like practicing guitar, writing songs, recording videos. It’s easier than being stressed out over what other people think or where I am in my career.
Focusing on the smaller aspects of what I do helps keep everything in perspective.
TigerBeat: What has been one of the most memorable moments of your career so far?
Megan: I got to visit YouTube’s headquarters last year and that was super cool. They have these amazing offices with videos games and a giant slide down the middle of it. My sister and I performed one of our mashups for the entire staff and we got to meet Susan Wojcicki the CEO.

TigerBeat: Do you remember when your “See You Again/Love Me Like You Do/Sugar” mashup went viral? Walk me through your reaction when you found out it was blowing up.
Megan: Going viral online is a super weird feeling. It’s so contained on your computer, and you watch numbers and comments come in like crazy, while you might be doing something boring like laying on your couch haha! It’s surreal.
TigerBeat: Your new EP “Bad Poetry” just dropped! How would you describe its sound?
Megan: I like to describe it as “raw pop.” We used a lot of real instruments, which is not as common nowadays. The organic aspect was important to me. I wanted it to sound like we were jamming in a room.

TigerBeat: What was the songwriting process like?
Megan: The writing process took place over the past two years. I wrote dozens of songs, but I wanted to make sure my first original project was saying things that I wanted to say.
After doing covers for years, being able to speak my own words was super important.
TigerBeat: Which song do you have a special soft spot for?
Megan: For me, “Black and White” feels like one of the most honest songs I’ve ever written. It sings sort of like a conversation, and for that reason it’s one of my favorites to play live.
TigerBeat: What message do you hope listeners take away from the EP?
Megan: I hope people connect with it and can relate it to their own lives. It has a larger theme of not always being a perfect person, and I think that’s a common feeling throughout growing up.
