Summer Hairstyles: Mess is More

Summer Hairstyles: Mess is More

It’s totally normal. We all get a teensy bit jealous when we see someone with messy hair that looks, well, FABULOUS. But the truth is, that cute messiness takes some planning, and even the stars don’t wake up like that! Summer is the perfect time to let your hairstyles loose —  so be the one flaunting the perfectly undone ‘do!

Don’t have a celebrity hairstylist nearby? We’re here to be your personal how-to guide. Take a peak at the following styles, and get messy!!

Step 1. Grab a teasing comb (they’re the ones with a single line of teeth, placed closely together!). Now it’s super important to be careful when you’re teasing hair, because if you’re not gentle enough, your hair might break or become frizzy! But this style will take a bit of tease. Separate the crown section of your hair from the rest, and begin teasing 1-inch sections. Never learned Teasing 101? This basically means softly brushing the hair down toward your scalp to make it more voluminous!

Step 2. As you tease, lay each section forward (so it’s in front of your forehead). Before you flip your hair back, spritz one to two inches of each section’s roots with your favorite hairspray. Let dry for a few seconds. When you flip you hair back, this will keep the poof elevated and funky!

Step 3. Pin the teased hair at the back of your head. Pull up random pieces at the top to get the messy look Zendaya has here. Then, right below the pins, tie all of your hair into an elastic. Ta-da! You’re looking funky enough to jam out on Shake it Up.

Step 1. Do you get shivers when you hear the words “fishtail braid”? You don’t have to! This trend isn’t as tricky as it looks. Start by loosely dividing your hair into two sections on the side you want your braid. Got your two sections? Now, take a section of hair from underneath the left section. Cross it over the left section, and combine it with your hair in the right section. You should be holding two pieces of hair again. Repeat, but this time, take a section of hair from underneath the right section, and cross it over and combine with the left section. Remember, at the end of each step, you should have only two sections of hair.

Step 2. Repeat this step, varying the size of the sections you pull over. To get the ribbon-laced look Bella has here, combine a ribbon with one section of hair, as if it was just another piece of hair. Braid it into your fishtail.

Step 3. Leaving two inches of hair, tie your braid with a thin elastic. If there is ribbon left over, wrap it around the elastic and pin in the back of the braid. Then, widen your braid by pulling gently at the interwoven hair, and casually let some hair loose around your ears. Can anyone say flirty summer look!?

Step 1. You know those tiny elastics and bobby pins that always get lost behind couch cushions or in jean pockets? You’ll want to find them — and a LOT of them — for this hairstyle. Leaving some hair loose around the frame of your face, pull back five to six sections of hair into small elastics (that match your hair color) at the top of your head. You look pretty funny, huh?

Step 2. Gently tease four to five inches of your hair in each section. Then, making a spiral shape, start pinning each section around its elastic inch by inch. Don’t worry too much about where you pin the hair, just think about keeping it up! By the time each section is completed, the elastics should be covered and it should look like your hair was never divided into so many different sections.

Step 3. Pull your hair with your fingers to loosen the spiraled strands and to create Vanessa’s messy, casual look. Spritz your bun with hairspray to keep in place all day.
