They’re all in this together!
In case you missed it, Olivia Rodrigo, Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie and more of our faves are starring in the upcoming series “High School Musical: The Musical” on Disney+. The 10-episode scripted series, set as a mock-umentary musical about a musical, takes place at the school where the original HSM flicks were filmed over 15 years ago.
Class is officially in session this Friday, November 8th when the premiere episode airs on ABC, Disney Channel and Freeform. Haven’t done your homework yet? Keep scrolling to get to know the seriously-stacked cast!
Olivia Rodrigo as Nini
Olivia plays Nini, a high school junior trying to show off her talent after coming home from summer theater camp. You might recognize 16-year-old star from Disney Channel’s “Bizaardvark,” where she played Paige.
Joshua Bassett as Ricky
Nini and Ricky used to date, but after a break-up, Joshua decides to win her back by auditioning for their school’s ‘High School Musical’ production. Recognize Joshua? It might be from his rose as Aidan on “Stuck in the Middle”!
Sofia Wylie as Gina
Now “Andi Mack” fans have a reason to love the series even more! Sofia plays Gina, who’s used to having the spotlight on her. So when she gets cast as the understudy in the musical, she’s determined to take the lead. Sofia also just recently starred in the Disney Channel digital series “Shook”!

Matt Cornett as E.J.
Matt plays E.J., Nina’s new love interest. E.J. is a seemingly super confident athlete, senior class treasurer, and co-captain of the water polo team. He’s got it all! But he definitely isn’t happy when he finds out that Ricky will be playing the lead with Nina in ‘High School Musical’ instead of him. Yikes! Matt has starred in other shows, including “The Middle” and “Southland.”
Dara Reneé as Kourtney
Every girl needs her trusty BFF, and that’s Kourtney! Dara plays Kourtney, Nini’s best friend, who is in charge of the production’s costume wardrobe. Kourtney loves all things fashion, too! Dara has appeared in “Black-ish”, “Freaky Friday,” and more of our faves!

Meet Ms Kourtney!!! 🦋🌸💫🎨 🛍 Coming soon to a Disney plus near you!😜 #disneyplus #highschoolmusical
Julia Lester as Ashlyn
Julia plays Ashlyn, E.J.’s cousin! Ashlyn is an aspiring songwriter, loves horoscopes, and is interested in the student council. Julia has been acting since she was 5-years-old, and she’s worked on a handful of fan-favorites — like “The Thundermans,” “Prince of Peoria,” and “Mr. Student Body President.”
Frankie A. Rodriguez as Carlos
We’re super excited for this character! Frankie plays Carlos, the ever-extravagant choreographer for the production. Carlos works closely with the drama teacher, Miss Jenn, and works tirelessly to make sure it’s the best musical the school ever seen. Oh, and you might recognize Frankie from his appearances on “Modern Family.”

ANDDD that’s a wrap! See y’all November 12th!! #HSMSeries #DisneyPlus #CarlosForDramaClubPrez
Larry Saperstein as Big Red
Larry plays Big Red, Ricky’s go-to best friend and total skater boy. Big Red used to love third-wheeling with Nini and Ricky, so he uses humor to make him and Ricky feel better after the break-up. Big Red joins the musical’s backstage crew, because he might have a little crush on Nini. Uh oh! We’ve heard of love triangles, but this is starting to sound like a love rectangle! Larry previously starred on “Fan Girl.”
Kate Reinders as Miss Jenn
The theater department would surely be lost without Kate’s character! Kate plays Miss Jenn, the excited and energetic drama teacher. Kate is no stranger to the theater world, as she’s appeared in various Broadway hits including “Wicked,” “Into the Woods,” and more!
Mark St. Cyr as Mr. Mazzara
Every drama teacher needs a reality check! Mark plays Mr. Mazzara, the high school’s S.T.E.M. teacher who butts heads with Miss Jen on a few occasions. But will Mr. Mazzara cave and play in the musical? We’ll have to wait and see!
