Let’s go, Wildcats…it’s almost time for season 2!

Ever since the first season of “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series” ended, we’ve been desperate to find out what happens next with all of our favorite characters. Luckily, the new episodes are currently in the works!

And even though the cast and crew has been pretty secretive, we’ve still been able to pick up a few things here and there. Keep scrolling to catch everything we know so far!

1. The musical will be “Beauty and the Beast”! As we reported back in February, the cast announced in a video that they’ll be bringing Belle’s enchanting story to life on stage this season. Looks like the students of East High will be trading in dancing basketball players for dancing forks, and we are ready for it!

2. All of the original cast members are returning! While the announcement video only featured a few of our favorites, an Instagram post from the first season 2 table read confirmed that even more familiar faces from season 1 will be back and better than ever!

3. There will also be some new (yet super familar) faces joining the cast! Singer, songwriter, and “Shazam” star Asher Angel will be playing Jack, a smooth-talking student with wanderlust, and Broadway alum Andrew Barth Feldman will play a French exchange student named Antoine.

4. Two episodes were finished before production was shut down. In a recent interview, the show’s creator, Tim Federle, shared that before COVID-19 hit and stay-at-home orders came into play, they’d already filmed the first couple of episodes and were in well into the editing process. Take a look at this picture of the season 2 set decoration that he shared on Instagram!

5. But guess what? They finally finished filming (safely) and revealed a release date! May 14th CAN’T. COME. SOON. ENOUGH. The calendar is already marked!

6. Season 2 will have two more episodes than season 1. While season 1 only had 10 episodes, season 2 will be 12 episodes, giving us more of the “HSMTMTS” content that we are desperately needing. BEST. NEWS. EVER!

7. There will be more original music!  If you loved songs like “All I Want” and “Just For a Moment”, you’re in luck! Season 2 will feature more original music, as well as a few show tunes, just like season 1!

8. Seb is becoming a series regular. If you ship Seb and Carlos together just like us, get ready for more cute moments! Joe Serafini‘s character is going to be a series regular in season 2, and we can’t wait to see more of him.

9. We’ll be seeing more of Miss Jenn’s “romantic situation” too. Creator Tim Federle also revealed that fans will be getting a glimpse into Miss Jenn’s love life during the upcoming season. Does this mean that those sparks flying between Miss Jenn and Ricky’s dad could lead to the start of something new? (Pun intended).

10. And by “romantic situation,” we mean a look at her “romantic past” as well. Miss Jenn’s ex-boyfriend, Zack (played by “World of Dance” judge and “Dancing With The Stars” champ Derek Hough), steps into the scene as a drama teacher at North High (AKA, East High’s BIGGEST rival). This competition is about to bring the heat!

11. Fans will eventually find out what happens between Ricky and Gina. Tim Federle has also acknowledged the #Rina stans that want to see Ricky and Gina end up together. “I know we’ve got some Rina stans out there, and I’m hoping this show has five or seven seasons so we’ll see where they all end up,” he teased.

11. Season 2 is expected to bring “more drama” than ever! In an interview before season 2 began production, Olivia Rodriguez said, “I think [the new season] is going to bring a whole lot more drama…I [also] think I’m going to grow a lot as an actor and as a musician.” We can’t wait for it all to unfold!

12. Joshua Bassett thinks season 2 is better than season 1. On an Instagram Live with Brazilian singer Any Gabrielly, Josh said, “What we’ve done so far is my favorite thus far…It blew the first season out of the park so I’m super stoked for people to get to see the next season, I am pumped about it!”
